The app crashed & won't start
Even though I restarted the iPhone the app won't start now. I had already added a lot of information ... I hope I didn't lose it!

You shouldn't lose the data providing you don't delete the app. Can you remember what you were doing prior to the app crashing? When you say the app won't start, do you mean that it never displays anything, or that it gets to the Families screen then crashes when you select a family file? Malcolm |

I hope I didn't lose it! No, I didn't delete the app, hoping that there would be a fix that would salvage the data. After touching the Families app, it comes up to a blank Families screen, tries to list the families (3), but never does, then goes back to the Iphone apps screen. I had been entering unmarried couples whose children resulted in 1/2 children, etc. The children were sometimes not displaying properly - not showing up at all either underneath the couple or in the individuals list. Then I would restart the Iphone, and afterward sometimes I would see several entries for the same individual where I had tried to re-enter them. Towards the end, before the app would no longer come up, I saw one child that appeared for a couple that actually belonged to a different couple, so no doubt a database index was out of whack. Another symptom was for an unmarried couple with children, it would sometimes show "1 of 3" or at one point "1 of 5", when it should have only been "1 of 2". So I tried some tricks to make it right, like choosing "unlink from husband". Then the number would go down by one (i.e., from 5 to 4) Dave Sandusky |

It looks as if you've hit a bug in adding children which has resulted in some inconsistency in the database. The app normally resumes with the view last displayed before it exited. This involves various database accesses and in your case one of these is encountering an exception, causing the app to exit. For the next version I've added an option in Settings (via the Settings app, not the app's own settings) to force the app to start on the Family Files View, thus avoiding any database accesses. This will allow the family file which is causing the problem to be transferred to the PC and either sent to TelGen for investigation or processed using Legacy's File Maintenance>Check/Repair option. Because of the time taken by Apple to approve new versions of apps, it will be approximately 7-10 days before this version is available for you to install. I'm sorry for this delay but we are subject to Apple's procedures. Your choice is either to wait for the new version, or to delete the app and resync it from iTunes, which would mean discarding your changes. We obviously need to investigate the problem which led to the database corruption in the first place. Can you remember what operations you had performed immediately prior to noticing errors in the display? Malcolm |

No, not exactly (and I can't get into the pgm to refresh my memory!) But I was trying a couple of different ways to get it to display properly. I'd basically remove all the links to parents for children of the parents I was having problems with, then even remove the parents, then re-add parents. Sometimes I'd try adding the child back in the view where it shows the parents and children on the same screen, then sometimes if the child was already in the database, i'd add the parent from the search screen - I think it was thru the magnifying glass icon on the bottom. I know that's pretty vague, but I was making changes like crazy toward the end. I'll just wait for the update. |

I suggest you set the Settings option "Disable Resume" ON (via the Settings app, not in Families itself!) and see if this allows you to start Families and get to the Families View screen. If so, transfer the file which caused the crash to the PC, take a copy of it unchanged then try running Legacy's File Maintenance>Check/Repair and see if any problems are reported. If you're happy to do so, you can also send a copy of the corrupt file to us at supportinfo@telgen.co.uk for investigation. I did find one problem associated with adding marriage records (which in turn can affect child records) which might have been responsible for your problem. This is fixed with the latest version of Families Sync (1.1.1). Malcolm |
