Sync Trouble
I've installed Families on my iPad and Families Sync on my PC (Windows XP) but cannot figure out how to transfer a Legacy file using a USB connection. At one point I get an error message: "The Microsoft.JET.OLEDB.4.01 provider is not registered on the local machine." The only option given is OK, and that does nothing. I have no idea what the message means.
Trying to follow the Transferring Family Files instructions is confusing. I'm not understanding what's supposed to be where. When I open iTunes on my PC I can see and select the iPad in the left pane, but where is this "Apps tab" supposed to be? Under Devices I have only iPad, and under that is (1) Music and (2) Books. There's an Apps under Library, but that just shows the apps installed on the iPad. Where's the one where I'm supposed to select and scroll down to see the section headed "File Sharing"? If I'm stuck at this point, I shudder to think what will happen if I should get to the next step. Please help. |

Does your Windows XP installation have the latest updates (via Windows Update)? Regarding the transfer process, more details are provided in the help section "Transferring Family Files". When you select your iPad under DEVICES, the right pane shows a number of tabs - Summary, Info, Apps etc. Select Apps and scroll down and you'll see the section headed File Sharing in which Families will be listed. I have only a few apps on the iPad so the list is short and it looks like that's the bottom of the screen; I didn't realize that you could scroll down below that to see more options. But now that I'm there, I see the sample file, my own test file, and a folder called simply "Run." The button choices at the bottom of the screen are Add or SaveTo, but the Transferring instructions say to "run Families Sync . . ." Exactly how does one do that? I don't see any option to "Sync using USB/iTunes" as per the instructions. Nor have I found an option, "Write Legacy file to Device." Malcolm, the Families app looks like it will be very helpful; downloading the app and Families Sync was quick and simple, but transferring a Legacy file for the first time is becoming something of a nightmare. It's especially troublesome for those of us with poor vision, since I use one pair of glasses for the computer and a different pair for the iPad. The Transfer instructions on the iPad are tiny and can't be enlarged so I use a magnifying glass. Going back and forth among the computer, the iPad, iTunes, the transferring instructions, the two pairs of glasses and a magnifier is borderline exhausting. I do appreciate your help and hope you can get me through this initial trial. |

I have no idea what the message means. The transfer process involves two separate programs - iTunes and Families Sync. Note that the help is available in Families Sync as well as on the iPad, so you should be able to read it much easier there. You can set up a window displaying the help while also showing the main Families Sync screen. Start by running Families Sync, select "Sync iDevice using USB/iTunes", and ensure the option "Write Legacy File to Device" is checked. Click Next, then select your family file and click Open. The file will be converted to the format required by Families then the screen will show instructions on how to transfer this file to the iPad. This is the bit that requires you to switch to iTunes. Follow the instructions in the help for performing the transfer. Malcolm Green |

RE: Sync Trouble
Malcolm:
That's where the instructions lost me. In that paragraph of "Transfer using USB" we were making selections in iTunes and the last sentence sounds as if Families Sync can be opened from there. A little clue like, "Open Families Sync in Windows (Start > All Programs > TelGen > Families Sync)" would have signaled the "lane change." So now I come to Step 2 of the instructions. In Families Sync I've selected the Legacy file that I want to transfer and clicked Open. That's where I get the error message mentioned at first. This is at the dialog box showing "Converting Legacy File to SqLite Format:" and a progress bar. Then a box pops up saying: "Operation aborted. The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine." The only option is "OK," and clicking that returns me to the Families Sync dialog box with the tabs for selecting the transfer method. I'll try adding a screenshot as an attachment but am not confident that will work. What now? |

RE: Sync Trouble
(02-Apr-2011 09:15 PM)Kirsten Wrote: Malcolm: This error is proving problematic to diagnose. It relates to the software used to interface to the Legacy family files which are in Microsoft Access format. This software is distributed with the Windows operating system and should normally just be already installed and available to use by Families Sync. The implication is that there is a problem with your Windows XP installation. This is the first instance of this error we've had reported in many hundreds of Families installations. The following are some suggestions which you may want to try: 1. Ensure Windows XP is updated at least to service pack 3. 2. Uninstall and reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, and ensure it is updated to service pack 2. 3. Follow the directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114/en-gb for updating the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine to the latest service pack. 4. Try Families Sync on another PC if you have access to one! I'm sorry I can't be more specific in identifying the cause of the problem. Malcolm Green |

RE: Sync Trouble
Malcolm:
As it turned out, everything you mentioned was already installed and up to date. Fortunately I have a friend in corporate tech support and he guided me through a change to the registry to manually register the Jet DLL. Now things are working properly. |
