Problems with Wi-Fi file transfer
A number of users have reported problems using Families Sync to transfer family files to iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad using Wi-Fi. The problems include the inability of Families Sync to locate the device, and errors such as "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" or "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond" while attempting a transfer. We have posted a checklist of steps to help resolve these problems in the forum FAQs (Problems connecting via WiFi) and some users have successfully overcome their problems using this information.

However it is clear that there can be many things that can go wrong or interfere with this process. Unfortunately, troubleshooting situations like these can be extremely difficult and time-consuming, and we are not always able to determine the cause of the problem. We have therefore implemented an additional method for transferring files using USB and iTunes File Sharing. As well as avoiding the problems with Wi-Fi this reduces the time taken to transfer files by an order of magnitude. This new feature is available in Families 1.0.2. Please use it to transfer your files if, for any reason, you are unable to use Wi-Fi. Note that iTunes File Sharing requires your device to be running iOS 3.2 or above.
